Music Producer Derek Mason – Nov. 19 1955 – Feb. 15, 2015

In memory of Derek Mason, and due to inadequate information from BC’s medical profession on the risk factors of Esophageal Cancer, we provide information to build awareness on the causes and prevention of EC. Here are a few links so you can start your own research. Links open to new browser tabs or pages:

1/ Esophageal Cancer Awareness Network – http://ecan.org/

  • One of the better mainstream websites with many page links, spreading awareness of this aggressive cancer
  • We note that ecan.org hasn’t been updated in the past 2 years. Perhaps they are looking for more funding or a change in direction.

7/ Bone-building drugs increase the risk of esophageal cancer and throat cancer

“Dr. Jane Green, a cancer epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, and her colleagues used the same database to examine the risk, but followed patients for an average of seven years. They reported Thursday in the British journal BMJ that filling one prescription for the drugs was linked to a 30% increase in the risk of esophageal cancer and filling 10 or more prescriptions or using the drugs for five years doubled the risk. They found no increase in risk for stomach or colorectal cancer however.” Read more

8/ When Antacids are Not Enough

“Heartburn, that almost quintessential American medical malady, now appears to be driving the nation’s fastest-increasing type of cancer. And the antacids used to ease the symptoms could, in some cases, do more harm than good”… Read more

Derek Mason was a user of those antacids. They masked a monster. Because of that, and our loss, we share that, story can be found here on our other public service page.
